Once upon a time, from a wounded land
My family was pushed to leave our homeland
I was asked to pluck, all my courage in one bag
Will we ever be back to my mother’s soil?
For the last time, I hugged the air deeply
I held to my heart the smiles of most loved friends
My friends! Will I ever see them again?
What does this really mean?
Guys why life is like this?
I love my friends
Those who accepted me the
way I am and couldn’t judge
my weakness but instead
helped me in changing and
were ready to defend me no
matter how wrong I could be
Now they are taken away
from me
Now I am alone again and no
one on my side
Selfish people can’t
understand what I mean but
only sociable ones can
We all believe in one God.
But under different ways
Under different names
With the different stories and
beliefs which connects us all
to that one God
The difference proves
that our IQs are not working in the same way
and that’s what differentiates us
I mean the difference differentiates us
through the different perspectives
in seeing and understanding things
Yes the world needs the ...
Right in your hands
That very hard night
Because I am your child
That time we had a chance to
turn a page and the only way
to get out of the stupid town.

Those are the sounds we
heard behind us as we were
running away
Oh my goodness
Now I understand the
meaning of refugee in
Kiswahili.
Mkimbizi
Meaning a runner
We need peace
I am called African
The UN calls me a refugee
I call myself an alien
My parents think I am
the baby
My neighbors say
I act as an adult
At school my class teacher calls me
the big head of the class
While the school head mistress thinks
I’m one of the well behaved kids
of the whole school.
I am beautiful like girls
But I am a boy.
Life is crazy
Life is mysterious
Life is beautiful
Life is confused
Life is full of fantasies
When I was 8 years
I remember I used to believe I am going to be a big boss
but now stuck here
I used to say I will be rich
but still I’m not
The only right thing I used to believe
is that I can be
whatever I need to be
because I am still a student
and my future is in my hands

War war war
Our enemy
The threat to human being
The great result of misunderstanding
You took our families
Such as uncles, aunts and relatives
Children are orphans
Our parents are handicaps
You turned our lives upside down
Our sisters and mothers were raped
Our grandparents were killed.
