Perspective
Anya Geist, 13
Life is but a glass of water
Half-empty, half-full
We squint at it, jaws jutted
Trying to see which half it is
We look at it from one way
And all we see is darkness
Empty schools, dusty and abandoned
The phantom footsteps of laughing children
Haunting the halls
We see empty grocery stores
Looking ripped apart, torn into pieces
Without the comforting din of...
Moonlight Waltz
Micah Lim, 11
"Moonlight Waltz" is a new piece written for piano, saxophone, and drums. I was inspired to compose this when I started learning about jazz style. I wanted to incorporate some of the things I learned to compose a waltz. It is called "Moonlight Waltz" because I imagine dances under moonlight to be very beautiful.
It Was
Grace Mancini, 11
It was red, like a ripe strawberry
It was orange, like a bright neon glow
It was yellow, like the blinding sun
It was green, like the soft touch of grass
It was blue, like the depths of the ocean
It was purple, like a lilac in full bloom
It was spreading farther then my fingertips could ever touch
It was the world
So warm
So welcoming
Yet so far away from the m...
Believe
Ben Starner, 12
The greater the challenge
The rougher the sea
The thinner the bridge
The less you believe
The wider the water
The bigger the plight
The harder the problem
The darker the night
The imposing contagion
There’s people who fight
So don’t be afraid
But careful of night
It soon will be over
Soon it will end its rampage
And will not come back
Until a diff...
An update from our sixth Stone Soup Book Club meeting!
This week, in Book Club, we began discussing Out of My Mind, by Sharon M. Draper. This is the story of a 10-year-old girl with Cerebral Palsy. She is extremely intelligent but struggles to communicate her thoughts—she cannot speak, write, or walk.
We began our session talking in small groups about the importance of words.
A Brief History of a Fictional Virus
Abhyudoy Basu, 13
A poem, and video reading by the author (3:45 min)
One New Year’s Eve, many summers ago,
A man in China started to cough and other symptoms began to show.
His wife and son took him to the doctor for a test,
The doctor said not to worry and prescribed him just rest.
Will it Ever End?
Cora Burch, 13
I wish we could all calm down.
The bright sky
We brought from this
Is sinking beneath the clouds of fear
We wrought.
Tell me, mother–
Will it ever end?
Canned beans and soups
Stock the pantry full
Yet it is not a war
Not an earthquake
We are facing.
Tell me, mother–
Can we come together without
Coming together?
How the Handshake has Evolved
Natya Chandrasekar, 12
Natya has made an amazing collection of cartoons about the "before" and "after" of the current pandemic, and we are very happy to be sharing some of them with Stone Soup readers! This is the first we are posting on our blog, and more will appear in the coming weeks.
Tick Tock
By Emerson Swift, 12
Sluggish slow-motion,
Motion—we’re stuck,
Stuck in time,
Time flies by,
By our loved ones,
Ones who are sick,
tick, tick, tick,
We don’t think there’s hope,
Hope, in everyday things,
Things like chalked messages,
Messages that are kind,
Kind of like inspiration,
Inspiration plays a trick,
tick, tick,
People nowadays,
Nowadays the hope,
...
