Right in your hands
That very hard night
Because I am your child
That time we had a chance to
turn a page and the only way
to get out of the stupid town.
Bang bang bang
Trrrack trrrack
Krack krack krack
Those are the sounds we
heard behind us as we were
running away
Oh my goodness
Now I understand the
meaning of refugee in
Kiswahili.
Mkimbizi
Meaning a runner
We need peace
I am called African
The UN calls me a refugee
I call myself an alien
My parents think I am
the baby
My neighbors say
I act as an adult
At school my class teacher calls me
the big head of the class
While the school head mistress thinks
I’m one of the well behaved kids
of the whole school.
I am beautiful like girls
But I am a boy.
Life is crazy
Life is mysterious
Life is beautiful
Life is confused
Life is full of fantasies
When I was 8 years
I remember I used to believe I am going to be a big boss
but now stuck here
I used to say I will be rich
but still I’m not
The only right thing I used to believe
is that I can be
whatever I need to be
because I am still a student
and my future is in my hands
and educati...
War war war
Our enemy
The threat to human being
The great result of misunderstanding
You took our families
Such as uncles, aunts and relatives
Children are orphans
Our parents are handicaps
You turned our lives upside down
Our sisters and mothers were raped
Our grandparents were killed.
I love my parents
I love everything they do
They give me food
They give me Christmas clothes
They sent me to school
I will be a president
They love me
They love my friends
They fight for me
I love them
The piece I chose to work on in the Half Baked Art Collaboration is named Yellow Brick Road in Rough Terrain. When I first saw it I was reminded of The Wizard of Oz. I learned that many refugees in those camps arrived as young adults and ended up as grandparents without ever leaving the confinements.
