Stone Soup welcomes submissions from young writers and artists ages 8-13. We're looking for your best creative work!
Before You Submit
All submissions are made through our Submittable portal. Please read all guidelines carefully before submitting your work.
General Guidelines
Age Requirement
Contributors must be ages 8-13 at the time of submission.
Original Work
All submissions must be original and previously unpublished.
Response Time
We typically respond within 4-6 weeks of submission.
Multiple Submissions
You may submit multiple pieces, but please submit each piece separately.
Submission Categories
Stories & Fiction
- Length: Maximum 2,500 words
- Genre: All genres welcome – realistic fiction, fantasy, mystery, adventure, science fiction, and more
- Format: Double-spaced, standard fonts (Times New Roman or Arial)
- What we look for: Strong characters, engaging plots, unique voice, and creative storytelling
Poetry
- Length: Up to 3 poems per submission, maximum 50 lines each
- Style: All forms welcome – free verse, rhyming, haiku, sonnets, etc.
- What we look for: Fresh imagery, emotional depth, creative use of language
Art & Illustrations
- Format: JPEG or PNG, minimum 300 DPI
- Medium: All mediums welcome – drawing, painting, digital art, collage, etc.
- What we look for: Original artwork that shows creativity, skill, and personal expression
Photography
- Format: JPEG, minimum 300 DPI, high resolution
- Content: Original photographs taken by the submitter
- What we look for: Compelling composition, interesting subjects, technical quality
Book Reviews
- Length: 250-500 words
- Content: Review books that other young readers would enjoy
- Include: Brief plot summary (no spoilers!), your opinion, who would enjoy the book
- What we look for: Thoughtful analysis, clear writing, helpful recommendations
Rights & Publication
Stone Soup acquires first publication rights for accepted work. This means:
- Your work must not have been published elsewhere before appearing in Stone Soup
- After publication, all other rights remain with you (the author/artist)
- You may republish your work elsewhere after it appears in Stone Soup, with credit to Stone Soup as the original publisher
